Understanding and addressing issues, positions, and interests is key in reaching a collaborative solution.

Issues are identifiable and concrete. They are tangible and measurable. Because they are easily identified, issues set the agenda. These issues must be addressed directly.

Positions are definable perspectives on the issues. Positions are the starting points for the negotiating parties.

Interests, however, are abstract and emotional needs. Interests involve feelings, and if ignored, are volatile. Interests are less tangible and not easily measurable. However, these interests are very real to the parties. These interests have to be addressed before mediation can be successful. Relationship interests can be used to smooth over most other interests, issues, and positions, and is therefore a key part of successful mediation.
